Some thoughts about integrating the mail into their current website.

But then, integrating the webmail (pretty standard squirrelmail) into the existing layout is another thing.
First, let us try integrating where other content would be:
I used some color to underline possible ui-problems: you got 2 searches and 2 login boxes. 1 Searchbox for searching within mail, the other for content on the website. The login/logout stuff is quite problematic: do you want to logout from the webmail or the site? The left menu is quite tempting for the casual user: “Hmmm, let me check if they got any recent publications.” One click and the user has navigated away from the webmail without having logged out. This creates a huge security hole solely because the ui is not well thought of. Besides that it looks ugly and is a quite cramped design.
So what about making it a wee bit larger, if we replace the left menu with the mail navigation? Move some of the squirrelmail block up to the breadcrumb? Let’s try:
the money and decision people might like this since the adverts are still visible, the campaign too. At the top the different user-actions are still easy to access. I am not too happy with it, the search and login boxes are still confusing, the breadcrumb shouldn’t suddenly change functionality. Consistency of the view is something most people really appreciate, having the left-menu swapping functionality is probably not the smartest thing to do.
Some input and suggestions would be welcome, after all I’m not a designer.
